A good schedule won’t help if you’re distracted by parties and friends. You need to come up with your own schedule and stick to it.

Mark asks…
Time management help for my daughter?
Okay, my daughter makes very good grades… all As and one B+ at a fairly rigorous private school, but she has poor time management skills. Right when she gets home from sports (around 7pm), she gets on Facebook and plays Farmville and Fishville and chats with friends. This lasts about 2 hours on and off; so she does not finish her homework until around 1 am. While she gets her homework done, the morning and the next day are the problem. In the morning she is almost impossible to wake up and is late to school almost everyday and then she complains about being tired all the time and often asks to miss school because she is too tired or did not have time to study for a test and/or complete an important assignment.
So, my question is: How can I control this? And, what do you think I should do.
Thanks in advance.

I used to have the same issues wiht my daughter.. then I started taking cell phones and internet privledges away at 10:00pm. Homework had to be done right after school. When she didn’t follow the rules I would have to ground her from her cell phone..and sometimes I would have to go in and unplug the computer myself at 10pm.. she eventually got it and things improved. Good luck!! Isn’t parenting fun??

Time Management/Procrastination. HELP!?
I’m having such a bad day today, I just got in trouble for putting something off that needed to get done, all because I procrastinated.
I need help! My poor time management skills and procrastination has taken over my life. Every aspect of my life is affected by this. I’m always doing homework at the last possible second, my house is a mess, my career is suffering because of it and I feel hopeless and don’t know where to begin. I always try to start a task and I get distracted and don’t finish it. I do have good intentions it’s just that I don’t know where to begin. If anyone has some good tips for me, maybe a book I should read or a system to follow I’m willing to try it. I’m just so upset right now because I’ve had to deal with this issue all my life. I don’t want it to continue affecting me the way it has been. I need to change my life.

You don’t need to read any books, just change your habits. Just do it right away when you have an assignment. Treat your assignments and tasks as your first priority. And learn how to be organized and manage your time. You can split small tasks to do a day, so that it’s not too overwhelming to you when you do things last minute. Planning ahead of time helps a lot.
I’m a big procrastinator who manages to finish things on time.

John asks…
Can you teach a college student time management skills?
My 17 year old daughter is in her first year of Junior College. She has very poor time management skills. She starts projects at the last minute and then stays up all night completing them.
She asks me to wake her up at a certain time and I try but she does not wake up. Then, she gets upset and cries because she did not get up.
Last night she needed help on an English Paper rough draft that was due today. I did not help her last night and she wanted me to wake her up early this morning to work on it. I could not wake her up though and she is upset.
She has Fridays off from school and wastes the whole day. She should at least do some light studying on that day. If I tell her that, she says “Don’t tell me what to do”
How do I teach her to manage her time more effectively?

Ken asks…
I am 21 years old I have absolutely no time management skills and I constantly beat myself up over taking?
“challenging” classes ie (I won’t be able to do them etc). (having a positive attitude is half the battle) about my poor time management: I have low frustration tolerence, stubborness, I’ve withdrawn from seven classes because of it to one degree or another. eg. (no one tells me what to do) and an underlying need for perfection I have been through two major depressions, two suicide attempts to chicken to complete obviously and as a result my motivation for learning is decreasing steadly I also feel guilty about giving myself a “reward” for getting somethinmg done, hell the reward should be that the job got done right? Anyone I need some inspiration is anyone else out there a “late bloomer” with regard to time management who is now successful at it? I need to know that, at my “late” age, i’m not the only one who struggles with this…and that there is still hope that I can become a successful adult. What would you say to fix my plethora of problems in this regard

admin answers:
The first thing I would tell you is that you are not as late a bloomer as you may think. i am over 30 with 4 kids and am just now finishing school to get my degree. (I wouldn’t suggest that anybody weight as long as I did). The second thing is to schedule your time correctly. make a weekly schedule. use different collored highlighters for each activity. ie. work, school, study, sleep, eating, family and friends. Block in what needs to be done first. The hrs that you work, then the hrs for school. The next thing you should do is block in time for sleep and eating. The following items should be study time. i would suggest blocking off 2 hrs for each hr that you are in class. This will give you ample time to get your work done. The last thing you should put in is your time with family and friends. If you follow your own schedule you will be able to manage your time without alot of effort. if your schedule is the same every week it will make it easy to make plans. GOOD LUCK
